parents

After separation, parents will need to deal with their children and often to reestablish relationships with them. This will be a difficult hurdle for you to face and may produce the most guilt. Children seek explanations of what went wrong, and you, often unsure yourself about the answers, will have difficulty providing sufficient answers for them. Children often feel alienated and confused during and after a divorce, and it is crucial that both parents reassure them that they love them and will stand by them. Keep in mind that love and security in childhood are building blocks to healthy, happy individuals and are the best gifts you can give your children.

children

Children are often at the center of family law disputes. One of the most difficult challenges facing parents when separating is determining how to best care for their children. Parents sometime fear that separation entails a loss of their parent-child relationship, and they are normally concerned about the potential negative impact of their separation on their children’s healthy development. Thanks to a large body of research completed over the last few decades, we now have a better understanding of the impact of separation and divorce on children. Using this research makes it possible to better assess and meet children’s needs.

plan

A parenting plan is a written document that outlines an agreement by both parents about how they will raise their children after separation or divorce.  A parenting plan is intended to establish principles and rules to guide how parents will share responsibilities for and time with their children. The plan should have enough detail to be useful, yet have enough flexibility to be realistic, and to meet the changing needs of the children involved.  It should also reflect the interests and the needs of the individual children concerned.  The parenting plan is best viewed as a working document that will need to be revisited and likely revised over time.
